March 2010 DP Theme - Passageway

Secret Passageways

Some doors you cannot open hide a mystery inside,

And words you never knew can tell you why.

A force we cannot measure more insistent than the tide

Ensures we never find the way to fly.

But close your eyes and see things that are hidden by the day

And you will find the entrance to a secret passageways.

A wall too high for climbing that’s without a single gate,

Surrounds the places where we want to be.

You know the wall will crumble if you spare the time to wait

But there’s a better way to liberty.

Just close your eyes and dream and you can claim your prize today,

if you stop looking backwards and walk down that passageway.

The answers to the questions aren’t inside an ancient book,

The answers to the questions are in you.

If you cut out the excuses, and you lift the lid to look,

I know you’ll understand what you must do.

So close your eyes, be happy, do the work another day;

There’s lots of fun and laughter further down the passageway.

Icy Art

Here I took a photo through the electric lines for the train towards the embankment. The ice make for great visuals, like art.

Bridge

Stavanger has made a new path from Hillevåg to Vaulen along the coast towards Gandsfjorden. Here is a bridge from Kristianlyst down to this path. The path is really nice and it is so wonderful walking there. We hope that one day one can walk from Stavanger to Sandnes along the coast.

You are my Sunrise

This morning I saw the birth of a sunrise like I have never seen before
The orange haze on the clouds giving away what was to come
The tip of this fiery body slowly emerging from beneath the horizon
A powerful event that marked the beginning for some and the end for others

In the midst of all of this my mind kept wandering to you
Damn, one more moment that I wish I could share with you
One more moment that I want you to feel, to have, to live with me
Far too soon it becomes too intense; I close my eyes but I can still see

My heart felt like it was on fire, just like my eyes
I felt all the love I have felt in a lifetime at this single point in time
It was as if I was overdosing on something, overdosing on love
I swallowed, desperately trying to clear my throat

I can see the glow around you, the fiery person that you are
So quietly beautify, but so intense when you want to be
So warm to my heart, so hot to my touch, so life-giving to my soul
You are my sunrise

Naw !!! These are Gourmet baby!

If you’re not already familiar with Gourmet, then you have a lot to learn, my friend. Probably one of the most creative sneaker brands out there right now (I’m not blowing smoke, I have two pairs, soon to be three). Last seasons creative line featured side-laced sneakers, and duck boot mid-top sneakers. Who else do you know would come with something as great as a duck boot sneaker. This upcoming Spring, Gourmet has gone above and beyond; pony hair (and also rich, dark cream leather). Now I doubt it’s real pony hair (but who knows?), but they’re beautiful. The line holds the Tredici’s, Quattro’s, and Dieci’s in brown, white, gray, and dark cream leather. Head to Gourmet for more styles.

Legalize it... and I'll advertise it...

For the food and packaging section of the July issue of Print magazine, the editors invited 4 design agencies worldwide to mock up a design about what a pack of marijuana cigarettes could possibly look like if it were legalized.
Strømme Throndsen contributed with two different design concepts:

1) White Widow. An elegant box containing 16 cigarettes, and various designed cases to fit your personality.

2) G13. A simple/basic/plain package in plastic with zip-lock containing four cigarettes.

More images after the jump.

Marmite XO -Special edition

Core Design has created an exclusive run of 200 hand-crafted jars for the launch of new extra-matured Marmite ‘XO’. A brand iconic in the UK, which has remained virtually unchanged for decades. The new flavour variant has been developed through an innovative social media campaign, creatively directed by The Core. In a unique example of consumer engagement, the brand offered its thirty biggest fans (so-called ‘super-lovers’) the chance to be inducted into a secret society, The Marmarati...(more after the break)

There they were given responsibility for refining the flavour, telling their story via blogs, social media sites and recruiting a wider group of members. Thanks to their work, hundreds of Lovers submitted proof of their love to http://www.marmarati.org/ in the hope of being initiated into The Marmarati’s ‘Second Circle’. One hundred and sixty made the grade.

Tasked with creating a beautiful, highly-collectable piece to reward this group for their efforts and welcome them into the society, The Core focussed on building rich vintage cues around Marmite’s key equities: black and gold. Each jar was hand-dipped in black wax and stamped with the gold crest of the Marmarati. The lids were finished with a watchstrap detail, individually signed and numbered by Lord Marmarati himself.

The resulting packs arrived with fans, selected press and buyers with an accompanying ‘taster’ jar of the finished XO product. Says Unilever’s Tom Denyard, Marketing Manager for Marmite, “The commemorative jar had to be something special – we were asking people to give up their time to submit proof of their love for the brand and the jar was their reward. It’s a testament to the quality of the design that when we ‘leaked’ images of how it would look, Twitter and Facebook exploded with conversation and entries increased threefold. Our Lovers just had to have one.”

Marmite XO will be unveiled to consumers in March, in a special pack designed by The Core.

Finger licking good Duck sauce...anyway!!

Slash and Burn

Slash and Burn By Amber Bravo

Slash-Paper Under the Knife

Museum of Arts and Design

Review by Amber Bravo

The interior lobby of the new Museum of Art and Design (MAD) looks as if it’s been hit by a tempestuous paper-shredder, as the entire ceiling is consumed by Andrea Mastrovito’s depiction of a storm seizing Christopher Columbus's ship (as well as our attention). Mastrovito’s paper maelstrom is just one of many impressive pieces in the museum’s latest show, Slash: Paper under the Knife, a multifaceted exhibition whose material limitation belies its expansive vision.

Organised by MAD’s chief curator, David Revere McFadden, Slash is the third instalment of the museum’s Materials and Process series, which previously included Radical Lace and Subversive Knitting in 2007 and last year’s Pricked: Extreme Embroidery. As McFadden explains, “Slash showcases artists whose works surprise for their complexity and content, and not just for their technical virtuosity”–although almost all of the works exhibit some level of virtuosity, whether it be Andrew Scott Ross’s elaborate mural/vignette Stones & Rocks & Bones, which suggests the scale and breadth of human ingenuity and destruction, or Olafur Eliasson’s Your House, which diagrams a house in section encased in a book. Ross’s sweeping, gestural strokes give way to painstakingly detailed silhouettes, whereas Eliasson’s concept (the book itself was designed by Michael Heinman) calls for architectural rigour with its precisely drawn and cut sections.
