DP Theme Day - Metal

This is an old time anchor, it was used in foregone time to anchor sailing ships. This one is laying on the quay beside the harbour in Stavanger. The anchor is a symbol of something that hold you fixed. For me it is also a symbol of faith, like God holding us close to Him.

Please visit Daily Photo sites which are participating in the 1st August theme, Metal.

The Gym and the Spinning Room

My husband works at CONOCo in Tananger, they have a nice gym, spinning room, sauna and Swimming pool. These days with a lot of obese and fat people, it is very good to have this function. The photos show a litle of the gym and the spinning room. COPNo also have health campaigns for its employees, this is laudable.

My own family have started using the Wii Fit to great success, I have written a bit here.

Gladmat 2008

Every year there is a food festival in Stavanger, we call it Gladmat here. It is the largest food festival in Scandinavia and it has started yesterday and will last until 26. This year there are 78 stands which participate in this gladmat. Gladmat started in around 1999 and has grown in size and confidence, with exhibitors and sellers and outdoor cafes and restaurants filling up both sides of Vågen - the main harbour in central Stavanger.

The goal is to promote the public's interest for food, by organizing a public festival that focuses on food and culture every summer. It will show the breadth of Rogaland Food County from sea and land, as well as food from various immigrant groups homeland.

The photo today shows some of the stands. For the next few days I will show you more photos of this festival, as well as tasting some of the delicaties - yummy yummy.

Steam Road Roller

This is a cute steam road roller just the perfect width to go on the sidewalks. These days a local company is digging down fiber optic cables for TV, internet and IP phone, and this machine is the perfect thing to make it all nice afterwards.

Homemade Wheel Hub

I saw this car near our home with a homemade wheel hub. It is made of a tin serving tray. Looks fun and funny at the same time, and it is a perfect fit. Self made is well made, ha ha.

Bergelands Tunnel - East Side

This tunnel take the people from the East side of Stavanger plus those from the Hundvåg island under the town towards the motorway. It ends up close to Rogaland theater. The opening here is close to the hurtigbåt terminal, so it is easy to get from the motorway to the ferries and on to the islands.

This is a small local supermarket, just across the street from some of the ferries, and the hurtigbåt terminal. It is open everyday for long hours, it is not one of the cheap shop but very convenient for some occations. Also all the travellers to the ferries can easily pop over and do their shopping.

Walking or running along the path around Mosvatnet there is this short detour to the right. Just up the hill and down on the other side. Great for joggers with still some energy.

Viking Heritage

This sculpture is in memory of Harald Fairhair or Harald Finehair (Norwegian: Harald Hårfagre c. 850 – c. 933). He was the first king (872 – 930) of Norway.

Little is known of the historical Harald. The only contemporary sources mentioning him are the two skaldic poems Haraldskvæði and Glymdrápa, by Þorbjörn Hornklofi. The first poem describes life at Harald's court, mentions that he took a Danish wife, and that he won a victory at Hafrsfjord. The second relates a series of battles Harald has won. He is not mentioned in any contemporary foreign sources. His life was described in several of the Kings' sagas, but the first of these were not written until the end of the 12th century, over 250 years after his death. Their accounts of Harald and his life differ on several points, and much of the content is clearly mythological. He is credited with having unified Norway into one kingdom. Modern historians assume that his rule was limited to the coastal areas of southern Norway.

Small River in Town

This water way comes all the way from Mosvatnet lake going to Breiavatnet lake. This part of the water way is not far from the Rogaland theater.

Some places are really charming to walk along or sit down and reflect.

Tou Scene

This is the newest edition to Stavanger culture life. It used to be our local brewery but now part of it is converted to a theatre. Other part serves other cultural functions.

Sporsluse

Many places in Stavanger one has made the street into blind end street. This is to avoid through traffic. But to let fire truck and garbage truck easily into the street, one block one end of the street with this kind of cement slab. Since those cars have higher axle distance from the street they can easily pass over. Normal cars have to go around to visit the houses, they can not use this as a through road.

Architect Office

This architect office belongs to a company called "Hellen & Hard". It is located in a picturesque part of Storhaug. The offices are really just ugly containers and they are really a sore in the eyes of the neighbours. See yesterday posting for houses in this area. If a private person build a house so much out of touch with neighboring houses I'm sure it would not be allowed. I have written about this subject before and here is one good example.

This is modern architecture for you, I rest my case.

Houses Series # 10

These houses are all located in a very old part of Stavanger. It used to house workers for the mill and factories around Storhaug. In the old days many families live in one house. Now they are upgrated and are cute and practical to live in.

Strange Loft Added

Here you have an old factory building made in to apartments. But on the roof the owner has made his own SF loft apartment. It does not exactly blend in, but he has a wonderful view from up there.

Sidewalk Art

On the sidewalk in Pedersgata someone has used an angle grinder to cut pictures of the houses next to it. So in the future if their houses are torn down, you can see how their original houses look like. I don't know if it is an art project or just an original thought by someone. It does look interesting walking along the sidewalk and see those small pictures.

This is the first and still very popular Asian shop. The things sold in this shop are mostly from Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand. I usually go there once a week, the people working there are very friendly and I like it a lot.

House series # 46

A nice family home in Gausel, yes the land is not big, but easy to take care. A double garage and the place for many visiting cars. It is close to a trafficked road, but have a fence specially made to cut a noise on this side of the house. This kind of fence is quite popular and we start to see them in many places.
